To speed up the energy transition we are transforming plants that use traditional technologies into hybrid power plants that integrate multiple technologies, for example, renewables with hydrogen or energy storage.
The energy transition
Our aim is to achieve complete decarbonization by 2040. We are gradually reducing the contribution from coal to zero: the closure of all coal-fired plants, originally planned for 2030, will be completed ahead of schedule, in 2027. We intend to lead the transition towards a fully decarbonized society, thereby enabling stakeholders to have access to renewable energy so that they can live sustainably.
We are making electric grids increasingly digital and resilient in 8 countries. We manage 2.3 million kilometers of network with more than 45 million smart meters
The energy transition will require Distribution System Operators (DSOs) to evolve into orchestrators of the different grid actors of the electricity ecosystem, enabling their active participation and contribution to carbon neutrality.
The shift towards a clean-powered and electrified world not only requires efficient and smart electricity networks, but also a new standard of infrastructure reliability, which places the customer at the center.
In Enel’s vision, electricity networks don’t only need to be technologically upgraded: they must also become inclusive and participatory platforms, fostering the engagement and interaction of all stakeholders. This is in addition to unlocking new opportunities in terms of innovative business models, with services and shared value. We believe that a collaborative approach involving all grid stakeholders, from energy companies to manufacturers, from institutions to regulators, partners and final customers, will enable us to reach the net-zero target by 2040.
In light of the impact of climate change and the increased frequency and severity of extreme weather phenomena, grids must become increasingly resilient . This will improve service reliability and quality in the future, as stakeholders become more dependent on electricity. That requires the physical reinforcement of the existing infrastructures, as well as investments in digitalization so that we can monitor and forecast extreme weather events ahead of time, thanks to a data-driven approach.
Grids must be intrinsically sustainable. We are building an integrated business model with sustainability at the core, and social and environmental issues are continuing to guide our business plan. We are also developing specific initiatives to extend the useful life of grid components and reintroduce them into the supply chain. Adopting a circular-economy approach means using as many sustainable and recyclable raw materials as possible in order to maximize their economic value and reduce their environmental impact.
